One person noticed.

Our story

It started with a simple idea: when we see a neighbor who needs help, we do something.

Almost Home Chicago began in 2015 and grew one passionate volunteer at a time.

The work grew because the need grew.

One need led to the next.

As neighbors brought different problems through the door, Almost Home kept expanding the ways it could respond.

Food & pantry

Groceries, pantry staples, essentials and a place to turn when food is running short.

Monday Dinner

A fresh hot meal, take-home lunches and a table where neighbors are welcomed.

Emergency help

Case-by-case support with housing stability, utilities, transportation and urgent needs.

Recovery support

Overdose prevention, naloxone access and practical support around treatment and recovery.

What makes Almost Home, Almost Home

The work stays close to people.

We stay close to the need.

We are local, hands-on and willing to deal with the problem right in front of us.

We see the person, not just the problem.

Food, clothing, transportation and financial help matter. So do dignity, conversation, belonging and being remembered.

We make room for people to help.

A student, retiree, family, business, church, team or neighbor can all have a place in this work.

We believe small things can become big things.

A lunch, a bus card, a haircut, a bag of groceries, a garden plant or one paid bill can change what happens next.

The next chapter

Today, the work is still hands-on.

Executive Director Jamie Chazinski carries the work forward with the same practical spirit: listen to the need, bring people together and do what we can to help with the next thing.

Almost Home is not the story of one person rescuing everyone else. It is the story of people noticing one another and deciding to show up.

“We see our neighbors. We show up. We bring what we can.”
